Experimental Study of Integrating CVT with Electric Scooter to Improve Performance and Efficiency

Internal Combustion Engine vehicles are crucial modes of transportation in the automotive industry. Resources required to operate these vehicles are being depleted, resulting in the increased demand for electric vehicles (known as battery-driven vehicles). Advancements are made to improve the efficiency of electric vehicles (cars) is more while that for electric scooters is less. Recent advancement displays Bosch’s approach of integrating CVT (Continuous variable Transmission) into an EV (Electric Vehicle) for improved performance and reduced energy consumption. This study focuses on employing similar technology in electric scooters to reduce the total energy consumed in terms of current supplied to the motor and improve velocity at optimal motor speed. Extensive Market research was performed to strengthen knowledge of CVT and electric scooters followed by 3-D (Three-Dimensional) modeling of the experimental setup. Tests were performed on two configurations including with CVT and without CVT to investigate its influence. Test setup with CVT improved maximum velocity at the wheel by approximately 40 % and current drawn at maximum velocity was reduced by approximately 70 %.
