Performance Analysis of Electric Vehicles and its Power Conditioning Unit
Nowadays, electric vehicles (EVs) are used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and requirements of fossil fuels. The power conditioning unit (PCU), which controls the flow of power between the battery pack of a vehicle and the electric motor, is an essential part of electric vehicles. The paper presents a comprehensive performance analysis of electric vehicles and their PCUs, focusing on key aspects such as efficiency, power conversion, and system stability. The performance analysis begins by characterizing the power flow dynamics within an EV, considering factors such as regenerative braking, battery charging, and motor operation. Various operating scenarios are simulated to evaluate the efficiency of the PCU under different driving conditions, including urban commuting, highway driving, and stop-and-go traffic. The impact of battery state of charge (SoC) and temperature on PCU performance is also investigated. Furthermore, to ascertain the PCU’s capacity to transform high-voltage DC power from the battery into the appropriate AC power needed by the electric motor, its power conversion efficiency is evaluated. The analysis examines the losses in power semiconductors, magnetic components, and cooling systems, providing insights into the overall efficiency and potential areas for improvement.
