Automated Data Extraction Framework for Customizable Safety and Security Analysis of U.S. University Campuses
Specific datasets on campus safety from identified U.S. universities are not widely available due to privacy concerns and legal constraints. Some universities provide limited, aggregated, or anonymized data related to campus safety and security incidents. The Clery Act mandates the publication of an annual security report, serving as a crucial public disclosure providing transparency on university campus crime policy, statistics, and practices aimed at enhancing campus safety. This paper focuses on the extraction of the fundamental data from the Clery-Act report, which is considered a main component in campus safety and security measurement. In our technique, we create a design and implement a data extraction process model from Clery ACT reports of multiple USA campuses. Our model allows configuring the list of campuses and the output dataset structure. It also enables the generation of various CSV file structures with various data ranges. The generated datasets can be used to classify and rank campuses based on their campus safety conditions.
