Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in Developing Countries: A Holistic Overview
The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in developing cities, including those in Romania, introduces both challenges and opportunities for power system stability and reliability. This paper examines the potential impacts of large-scale EV charging on urban power grids, particularly in scenarios where EV penetration is expected to increase significantly. Key challenges include heightened peak load demand, voltage instability, and transformer overloading, which are compounded by aging infrastructure and unpredictable charging patterns. To address these challenges, this study explores innovative strategies, including vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-home (V2H), vehicle-to-load (V2L), and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies. These approaches leverage the bidirectional energy flow capabilities of EVs to support grid stability, enhance energy resilience, and maximize the utility of renewable energy sources. The study focuses on the specific context of Romania, reviewing the current state of power grid infrastructure and the potential for integrating these technologies to optimize grid performance and support energy transition efforts. Additionally, the study reviews smart charging systems, demand response programs, and the integration of renewable energy to minimize environmental impacts and ensure sustainable energy solutions. Policy implications are also discussed, emphasizing the need for grid modernization, government incentives, and dynamic pricing mechanisms to encourage grid-friendly EV charging behaviors within Romania. By providing a comprehensive analysis, the paper highlights how Romania might be needed to navigate the challenges and capitalize on the opportunities presented by the growing EV market, ensuring a resilient and sustainable energy future tailored to the country's specific needs and infrastructure.
