Effect of Hydrogen Ionization on Fuel Cell Performance: Efficiency and Fuel Consumption
This paper investigates the use of hydrogen ionization as a technique to enhance the efficiency of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells. A conventional fuel cell system is compared to an “ionized” fuel cell system in which hydrogen gas is pre-ionized to increase the availability of protons for reaction. A detailed MATLAB/Simulink model, incorporating thermodynamic voltage and major loss mechanisms (“Loss of Activation Voltage,” “Loss of Ohmic Voltage,” and “Loss of Concentration Voltage”) for both cases was developed. Simulation results show that pre-ionizing the hydrogen can significantly reduce activation losses, leading to higher cell voltages at a given current. The ionized fuel cell yields improved performance across the polarization curve, with up to ~10 percentage-point higher efficiency observed at moderate loads. Power output is also increased for the ionized system due to the reduced polarization losses. These findings suggest that enhancing the hydrogen ionization process can be a viable method to boost fuel cell efficiency. The paper concludes with discussions on key takeaways and recommendations for future research to implement ionization in practical fuel cell systems.
