Battery Energy Storage System for Power Quality Enhancement in Electric Arc Furnace Circuits
This paper presents the development of a control system for a battery energy storage system (BESS), designed to enhance the power quality within the circuit of a steel mill equipped with an electric arc furnace (EAF). A detailed model of the EAF was developed to facilitate the analysis of power quality, including harmonics, power factor and unbalances. The outcomes of the simulations demonstrate that the BESS control system is capable of improving to a certain extent power quality, in accordance with the IEEE Std 519–2022 standard, enhancing the power factor and stabilising the active power demand of the EAF.
