Performance Engineered Mixtures (PEM) Approach for Improved Concrete Durability and Sustainability – Case Studies

The Performance Engineered Concrete Paving Mixtures Transportation Pooled fund (TPF-5(368)) has introduced state highway agencies to new and improved tests and technologies that measure engineering properties that are much more closely related to a pavement’s long term field performance than conventional properties This significant advancement in testing technologies allowed for a shift away from prescriptive requirements like strength, slump and total air content, toward performance-related criteria that are much better indicators of durability, such as transport properties, shrinkage, freeze-thaw durability and workability. This paper presents case studies of using the PEM concepts in four (shadow) projects, constructed in four different states (Iowa, New York, North Carolina, and Michigan). PEM concepts such as optimized gradation, Box Test, Super Air Meter, surface resistivity, and paste content are introduced. The paper explains how the PEM approach facilitated mixtures that are more durable and sustainable compared to the conventional mixtures that were previously used at the respective projects. The PEM mixtures had lower cement contents, lower cost, reduced carbon footprint, better workability, improved pavement smoothness, and lower permeability. Resources for agencies and other stakeholders interested in PEM tests and technologies are identified.
