Applications of Composite Insulator Systems in HVDC Grids: An Overview
Composite insulators, constructed from polymerbased composites that can withstand UV rays, pollutants, and mechanical stress, represent the latest technology of outdoor insulators. Presently, these insulators are supplanting traditional porcelain and glass ones due to their remarkable electrical and mechanical characteristics. Benefits like reduced weight, simplified transport and setup processes, as opposed to porcelain and glass, non-fragility, impressive mechanical resilience, elevated leakage current tolerance in polluted environments, and low maintenance requirements render them exceptionally wellsuited for application in High-Voltage Direct Current transmission (HVDC) lines. This paper aims to investigate the applications and explore the positive effects of composite insulators within the HVDC grids.
