Brown Skins, White Coats: Race Science in India, 1920–66
Most studies on race and eugenics have focussed on Europe, North America, and their erstwhile colonies. In this book, Projit Bihari Mukharji turns the focus, for the first time, on post-independence India. He shows that what began as 'race science' in colonial times was repurposed post-independence, by both right-wing majoritarians and left-wing liberals, for 'nation-building'.The science in race science relied on seroanthropology -differentiating races by their different frequencies of blood groups and other genetic 'markers'.Recent genome studies have revealed just how inadequate the seroanthropological markers were for this task.
