An Analysis of Translation Strategies for Metaphorical Idioms, Proverbs, and Slang—By the Example of <i>Empresses in the Palace</i>

《甄嬛传》是2011年播出的一部清宫电视剧，一经播出，好评如潮。随后该剧经改编压缩翻译至6集，于2015年3月15日在美国Netflix网站播出。国产剧《甄嬛传》中台词使用了大量隐喻，内涵深刻。本文以《甄嬛传》字幕翻译为例，探讨了隐喻性成语谚语及俗语翻译中归化与异化策略的使用。通过分析字幕翻译，考察了翻译过程中隐喻表达的转换与处理方式，深入剖析了归化与异化对于隐喻翻译的影响与作用。研究发现，归化策略在保留原文隐喻意义的同时增强了目标语言的可理解性和亲近感，而异化策略则更加忠实于原剧的表达，保留了隐喻的独特性和文化特征。本论文研究旨在为隐喻翻译提供更加全面深入的理解与探讨，为翻译实践提供理论指导与借鉴。Empresses in the Palace is a Qing dynasty television series that aired in 2011. It receives rave reviews. The series was subsequently adapted and compressed and translated to six episodes, which aired in the United States on March 15, 2015 on the Netflix. The lines in the Chinese drama Empresses in the Palace use a lot of metaphors with profound connotations. This article takes the subtitle translation of Empresses in the palace as an example to explore the use of naturalization and alienation strategies in metaphor translation. By analyzing the subtitle translation, it examines the transformation and treatment of metaphorical expressions in the translation process, and provides an in-depth analysis of the influence and role of naturalization and alienation on metaphorical translation. It is found that the naturalization strategy enhances the comprehensibility and intimacy of the target language while retaining the metaphorical meaning of the original text, while the dissimilation strategy is more faithful to the expression of the original play and retains the uniqueness and cultural characteristics of the metaphor. This dissertation study aims to provide a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding and discussion of metaphor translation, and to provide theoretical guidance and reference for translation practice.
