An Exploration on the Application of Reception Aesthetics Theory in the Study of Literary Text Translation

The theory of reception aesthetics emerged in the 1960s. This theory highly emphasizes the subjectivity of readers and believes that the meaning of a text is not unilaterally given by the author, but is generated through the reader’s reading activities. The reader’s cultural background, personal experience and expectations determine their understanding of the text. Therefore, translators need to take into account the expectations and cultural background of the target language readers to ensure that the translated text can be accepted by the target language readers. The theory of reception aesthetics has injected new standards into translation evaluation. In addition, with the development of the times and the advancement of science and technology, the theoretical framework of reception aesthetics provides a tool for analyzing new phenomena in the digital age and cross-cultural translation. However, due to its high emphasis on the subjectivity of readers, a series of subjective problems still exist. This paper will start from the perspective of reception aesthetics and demonstrate the specific application of this theory in translation research through cases, so as to analyze the practical significance of this theory and recognize its limitations, in order to inspire future translation practice.
