Mega Carbonate Platform Seismic Reservoir Characterization for CCS Storage Capacity Assessment
Summary In support of Malaysia’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) ambitions, the Mega Carbonate Platform (MCP) was identified as a high-potential saline aquifer for subsurface CO2 storage. Given the absence of well data at the target depth and challenges posed by carbonate complexity, a seismic-led, multidisciplinary approach was adopted for early-stage reservoir characterization. Anisotropic Pre-Stack Depth Migration (APSDM) seismic velocities were used to construct low-frequency models for inversion, enabling generation of 3D porosity volumes. A robust QA/QC process integrating sedimentological and petrophysical insights ensured geological consistency, while shallow well logs and available 4D seismic data enhanced calibration and model accuracy. The integrated workflow successfully overcame data limitations and delivered valuable inputs for static and dynamic reservoir modeling. This study demonstrates that seismic-driven characterization can enable reliable capacity assessments under constrained conditions and provides a replicable framework for evaluating other carbonate saline aquifers within Malaysia’s CCS roadmap.
