Fast Track CO2 Storage Screening Workflow Based on a Rich Geological Database

Summary In order to support and accelerate the identification of suitable CO2 storage sites, we present here a workflow relying on a pre-existing rich and ready-digitized geological database. With 2050 net zero targets rapidly approaching and CCS expected to play a vital role in meeting these ambitions this workflow and its enabling database help us screen and assess geological storage on both a regional and local scale to ensure the success of CCS projects worldwide. The workflow focuses on speed and efficiency of the screening process to ensure rapid and successful deployment of CCS. At the basin and local scale this fast track screening workflow stratigraphically defines the aquifers of interest and identifies the best location(s) within targeted aquifers for a CO2 storage permit application and focused 3D modelling of the potential storage site. The workflow integrates both surface and subsurface map criteria interpreted from the underlying geological database. It is demonstrated by an example from the Vienna Basin, Austria. Key subsurface controls mapped from the geological database in that basin include variable sediment thickness and shallow faults.
