Revamped Brownfield Model for CO2 Storage Assessment, Enhancing Depo-Environment Characterization and Containment
Summary Fluvial deposits are potential CO2 storage sites, but their complex, heterogeneous structures pose challenges for storage efficiency. CO2 injectivity depends on this heterogeneity, with flow barriers affecting plume migration. This study examines a depleted gas field with stacked channels as a CO2 storage site. Seismic data quality degradation, mainly due to a shallow gas cloud, complicates reservoir modeling. The main uncertainty is the distribution of fluvial facies, which impacts CO2 containment and storage efficiency. This research presents a new, fully reconstructed reservoir model, replacing the 2005 model. It enhances sedimentological representation and incorporates advanced geoscience and dynamic data. After history matching, the model is used for CO2 injection forecasting, thermal simulations, and long-term CO2 containment integrity assessment through a 3D geomechanical model.
