Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) – Operational Challenges
Summary Crondall Energy have recently completed several concept studies related to the development of CO2 transportation and storage systems and have also provided technical advice regarding the development of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) clusters in the UK. This presentation will address and discuss some of the key operational challenge associated with the development of CCUS industrial clusters and CO2 transportation networks. Key topics to be discussed include: The impact of CO2 emitter selection on impurities, transportation system specification and operational pressure. A discussion on CO2 phase behaviour and the importance of maintaining CO2 in either gas phase or dense phase for transportation. Challenges associated with intermittent CO2 flow and the need for system flexibility to manage pressure and flow variations. Temperature and pressure control operational challenges encountered through system life, with a discussion on the impacts and solutions for both early and late stages of storage site field life. Full chain system operability, emphasizing the need for stable operation, a clear understanding of operating limits and integrated system design to manage emissions, transportation and storage effectively.
