Hot-compression response and deformation behaviours of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Y aluminium alloy

Abstract A homogeneous Al-Mg-Cu-Zn-Y aluminium alloy was analyzed via compression test to investigate commonly used aluminium’s hot-compression response and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behaviour. Coupled stress–strain-temperature parameters, dynamic recrystallization, volume fraction, and grain size were calculated using parameters acquired from stress–strain curves. Through the combination of experimental data, work-hardening and softening stages in hot compression have recognizable dynamic recovery and DRX characteristics. Based on the research results, the exponent of the hyperbolic sine function was determined to be 6.60295 by applying the lattice self-diffusion activation energy (162.159 kJ mol −1 ) as the deformation activation energy. A work-hardening rate flow stress curve was adopted to establish the relationship between the stress and the Z-parameter. It is proven that the DRX critical and peak stress decrease with the temperature increase, and the strain rate decrease.
