Feasibility analysis of non-humidified medium-to-high flowoxygen therapy via mask in patients during the anesthesia recovery period

Objective To explore the feasibility of non-humidified medium-to-high flow oxygen therapy via mask in patients during the anesthesia recovery period. Methods From December 2021 to December 2022, 407 postoperative patients in the post-anesthesia recovery room of a grade-A hospital in Qingdao were selected as the research objects. A non-contemporaneous controlled study was used to divide the research objects into a control group of 223 cases and a test group of 184 cases. The control group used humidified medium-to-high flow oxygen therapy via mask, and the test group used non-humidified medium-to-high oxygen therapy via mask. The effects of oxygen therapy, patient comfort, incidence of adverse reactions, time spent in oxygen therapy-rated nursing, and medical costs were compared between the two groups. Results The humidity of the inhaled and exhaled air in the mask of patients in the test group were lower than those in the control group (P<0. 01). There was no significant difference in SpO2 at 30 minutes after oxygen inhalation between two groups(P>0. 05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of nasal discomfort, nausea, chest discomfort, cough, and sticky sputum between two groups(P>0. 05). There was no significant difference in scores of self-assessment on dry throat and difficulty in expectorating between two groups(P>0. 05). The time spent in nursing of oxygen therapy in the experimental group were significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0. 05). The medical expenditure of oxygen therapy was reduced in the test group. Conclusion The non-humidified medium-to-high flow oxygen therapy via masks did not reduce the effect of oxygen therapy and the comfort of patients during the anesthesia recovery period, and did not increase the incidence of adverse reactions of oxygen therapy. It effectively reduced the time spent in oxygen therapy and nursing and related medical costs of patients. It is economical and feasible. It is worth promoting and applying in the post-anesthesia recovery room.
