Application of STEADI tool kit in the prevention of falls in elderly patient in the Department of Cardiology

Objective To investigate the application value of Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries(STEADI) tool kit in the prevention of falls in elderly patient in the Department of Cardiology. Methods A total of 130 elderly patients admitted to the Department of Cardiology between March 2021 and March 2022 were divided into intervention group and control group according to random number table method, with 65 cases in each group. The control group received routine fall prevention education about hospital environment and medication use. The intervention group used the STEADI toolkit including education on fall prevention, gait and balance assessment, communication skills guidance, case learning, etc. The scores of the Fall Risk Self-assessment Table and the Barthel index of activity of daily living before and after intervention were compared between the two groups. The incidence of falls during hospitalization, 1 week of discharge, 1 month of discharge, and 3 months of discharge were compared between the two groups. Results There was a significant difference in fall risk self-assessment scores and Barthel index score between the two groups after the intervention finished and 3 months after intervention(P<0. 05). There was a significant difference in the incidence of falls between the two groups at 3 months of discharge (P<0. 05). Conclusion The use of STEADI toolkit can effectively improve patients' activity of daily living, reduce risk of falls in patients with cardiovascular diseases
