Recognizing Surigaonon-branded food and beverages: Identifying the cultural identity of Surigao del Norte
Abstract: This research aims to explore how the unique food and beverages of the Surigaonon people serve as carriers of history, tradition, and culture. Among the featured products are sayongsong, espasol, ampaw, Gigaquit rhum, and other local creations made from indigenous ingredients such as rice, cacao, peanuts, fish, and nipa fruit. The study employs a qualitative research design, particularly utilizing interviews, observations, and questionnaires to gather data. Participants were selected through purposive sampling and include local artisans, entrepreneurs, elder residents, and cultural advocates from various municipalities of Surigao del Norte. Data analysis reveals that these food and beverage products are not only viewed as sources of livelihood but are also considered essential elements of the province's identity and cultural wealth. They reflect the creativity and ingenuity of the Surigaonon people in utilizing local natural resources. The study recommends a more systematic documentation and promotion of these cultural food items through programs, festivals, workshops, and digital marketing. It also underscores the importance of integrating knowledge of “Tatak Surigaonon” into youth education to preserve and enrich local culture and traditions. The findings of this study may be valuable to tourism planners, local government units, and cultural advocates in promoting a tourism and economy grounded in authentic local identity.
