Analysis of the composition and purity of essential oils and resins from copaiba (Copaifera spp)

The analysis of the composition and purity of copaiba essential oils marketed in Brazil is of significant scientific importance, given the wide range of therapeutic and industrial applications associated with these natural products. In this study, different copaiba oils available on the Brazilian market were examined using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to evaluate their composition and purity. The chemical characterization of these oils allowed for the identification of bioactive compounds, such as sesquiterpenes and diterpenes, which possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and healing properties. Furthermore, investigating the different chemotypes of copaiba and their relationship with therapeutic efficacy enables the standardization of the quality of these products, promoting their safe and effective use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other health and wellness products, as well as contributing to product authentication.
