Introducing Closed-Loop Chemically Recyclable Polymers in Undergraduate Polymer Chemistry Course

The growing environmental impact of plastic waste has highlighted the need for sustainable polymer materials and recycling strategies. To address this challenge, we integrated the concept of closed-loop chemically recyclable polymers into the undergraduate Polymer Chemistry curriculum. This approach not only reinforces foundational topics such as ring-opening polymerization and polycondensation but also introduces students to cutting-edge advancements in polymer sustainability. Through a combination of lectures, classroom discussions, and a final project, students learned the synthesis, characterization, and recycling of polymers, such as poly(γ-butyrolactone) and long-chain polyesters derived from biorenewable sources. Learning objectives focused on conceptual understanding, practical application, and critical thinking with assessments including quizzes, exams, and a group project. The learning outcomes revealed students’ abilities to design new recyclable polymers and critically evaluate their sustainability. This curriculum not only equips students with essential knowledge and skills in polymer chemistry but also fosters a sense of responsibility toward sustainable development, preparing them to contribute to the advancement of green and circular polymer materials.
