The Impact of Augmented Reality on Student Engagement and Retention in STEM Education
In this paper, the authors examine the possibilities of Augmented Reality (AR) fused with Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) in increasing students' interest and their performance within the STEM curriculum. AR technology makes learning immersive and real, thereby interacting with theory and practice to offer an interconnectivity platform. A comparison of results obtained from using AR-integrated instruction and pedagogy without AR reveals a rise in the retention level of 30% as well as enhanced engagement of students when using AR tools. The study highlights AR's ability to simplify STEM education by easing cognitive overhead and enhancing concrete experience, making learning engaging and inclusive through teamwork and problemsolving. While challenges such as costs, technological restraints, and teacher training exist, the study emphasizes the need for collaboration among educators, policymakers, and developers to make AR tools affordable and user-friendly. Future research should explore long-term effects of AR on learning achievement and its integration with AI and VR technologies. Conclusively, the authors opine that AR is a viable means that can effectively transform STEM education through increased interest, better retention rates, and correspondence to actual problems. As a result, this research proposes the integration of AR in learning environments that would prepare learners for STEM careers.
