Virtual Reality Ethics: Understanding the Behavioral and Wellbeing Consequences of Virtual Experiences
This study covers a wide range of literature on the psychological, social, and ethical implications of virtual reality. This article delves into the main topics of moral concern about virtual reality (VR) technologies. First, this article describes in depth how VR differs from traditional social networking platforms due to the concepts of Perspectival Fidelity, Context Realism, and Virtually Real Experiences. Second, virtual reality may bring mental health problems, such as Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder. Third, because VR blurs the line between the real and the unreal, it raises severe worries about users' neglect of their actual bodies, cyber sickness, eye disorders, and cognitive overload. Fourth, VR technology may be used to collect personal information, which might be exploited in ways that jeopardize personal privacy and pose a risk of manipulating users' views, emotions, and behaviors. Finally, it discusses how virtual reality has helped to treat diseases in the medical profession. These issues concerning VR naturally generate problems related to public policy and ethical considerations. This paper also proposes policy recommendations and ethical implications to provide solutions to the issues concerning.
