Producción científica en Scopus sobre la capacidad funcional del adulto mayor: Un estudio bibliométrico
Population aging has generated a growing scientific interest in the functional capacity of the elderly, understood as an essential clinical component to preserve autonomy, prevent dependence and optimize quality of life. In this context, the literature indexed in Scopus has shown a significant expansion. The aim of the study was to analyze bibliometrically the scientific production indexed in Scopus between 2020 and 2024 on the functional capacity of the older adult, in order to identify the most influential publication patterns, authors, countries and journals, as well as emerging thematic trends. A total of 121 documents from Scopus (2020-2024) were analyzed using an exploratory-descriptive design, using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer to evaluate productivity, impact and scientific collaboration. Scientific production shows sustained growth, led by Brazil, Portugal and Australia. Aubertin-Leheudre, Buckinx and Garcia-Hermoso stand out as key authors, and the journals Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and Geriatrics & Gerontology International stand out for their impact. An interdisciplinary approach in medicine and nursing predominates, with emphasis on “sarcopenia”, ‘exercise’ and “quality of life”, indicating an orientation towards preventive and functional interventions in old age. This bibliometric analysis contributes to the understanding of the evolution of knowledge on the functional capacity of the elderly and guides future research.
