Efficiency of team time estimation in project development

This article discusses modern approaches to task completion time estimation, their strengths and weaknesses, and the impact of various factors on accuracy. Methods such as expert judgment, analogy, and statistical methods are considered, and examples of best practices that minimize the risks associated with estimation errors and improve the overall performance of the team are given. The complexity of time estimation is influenced by factors such as developer experience, task complexity, technical and organizational barriers, and subjective biases. The article describes several estimating methods, including expert judgment, analogy-based approaches, decomposition into subtasks, and statistical estimation, each with its own advantages and limitations. Common problems are also discussed, including incomplete requirements, changing project scope, overconfidence biases, and unaccounted for dependencies. To improve accuracy, the article proposes hybrid approaches combining several methods, data-driven planning, retrospectives, and risk management strategies. By implementing these measures, companies can reduce estimation errors, improve productivity, and deliver better project outcomes. The article concludes that a comprehensive, flexible approach to time estimation—including data analytics, adaptive planning, and the human factor—is critical to successful project management in the IT industry.
