Enhanced Transformers Thermal and Moisture Distribution Modelling for On-Line Assessment of Insulations Condition

This study investigates the thermal behaviour and water distribution in the insulation systems of liquid-filled transformers during dynamic loading to simulate in-service operation. The research integrates an enhanced dynamic thermal model coupled with a moisture content estimation code to monitor water migration between the liquid and solid insulation. By utilising a discretised geometry of a transformer, the model examines moisture content in both liquid and solid insulation at various locations. This improved model provides a comprehensive understanding of the transformer, enabling accurate assessment of the paper insulation condition. A detailed understanding of thermal behaviour and moisture distribution will enhance the operational performance and reliability of transformers in service. Additionally, a more precise assessment of insulation aging will allow for optimised transformer design, leading to better reliability and more efficient use of materials.
