Dielectric Liquids for Insulation and Cooling: An Electric Vehicle Perspective by the IEEE DEIS Technical Committee on Liquid Dielectrics
Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a promising solution to address the global energy crisis and climate change challenges in the transportation sector. As the shift towards electrified transport accelerates, the industry is set for significant transformation in the coming years. Modern EVs feature batteries, powertrain, and high-power-density electronic systems that require advanced dielectric and thermal management. Along with the traditional colling approaches, liquid cooling dielectrics are potential candidates for maintaining the reliability of these key components. This article emphasizes and explores the current state of dielectric liquid applications in EVs, focusing on both indirect liquid cooling and immersion cooling methods. Key issues related to enhancing the performance of these liquids are also discussed.
