The Relationship Between Indicators of Intellectual Development and Field Independent – Field Dependent in Groups of People With Different Types of Functional Asymmetry
Introduction. There was made an attempt to study the interrelationships of such complex mental phenomena as cognitive style and intellectual development in the article. The type of functional asymmetry is considered as one of the factors of determining the formation of cognitive style and the peculiarities of the development of mental cognitive processes. Materials and methods. 117 people aged 19 to 22 years old were examined. Then they, according to the results of the tapping test, were divided into three groups: right-handed, ambidextrous and left-handed. The test "Included figures" was used to assess the severity of field independent - field depended. The features of intellectual development were assessed by using the battery of intellectual tests "KR-3-85" by M. M. Reshetnikov and B. V. Kulagin. Results. It was found that the level of field independence was statistically higher in the right-handed group. At the same time, in the ambidextrous group, "field depended" is more common than in other groups. In the right-handed group, the indicator of field independent turned out to be related to the ability to establish logical connections between concepts and the ability to find and isolate patterns in numerical material. In the left-handed group, the indicator of field independent is related to the level of development of mnemonic abilities. In the ambidextrous group, no relationship was found between indicators of field independent and indicators of the development of mental cognitive processes. Discussion and conclusion. It is possible to suggest that the formation of field independent in the group of right-handed people is due to the leading role of the left hemisphere, responsible for the analysis and logical structuring of incoming information. The different ratio of field independent - field dependent in groups of people with different types of functional asymmetry may indicate a relationship between the type of functional asymmetry and the cognitive style.
