ON THE VERBAL ASPECT FROM AN APPLIED POINT OF VIEW

The article pursues applied research within the framework of the general theory of Russian aspectology. The author sets out the goal to examine some linguistic questions of the verbal aspect from a practical angle, primarily from the Russian as a foreign language learner’s point of view. In this sense, theoretical ques tions should be updated for practical application. This paper discusses three broad topics related to the subject matter: firstly, the question of the significance of apply ing a suitable, i.e. an optimal linguistic model in the study of verbal aspect; sec ondly, the question whether in descriptions of aspectual meaning, in addition to the traditional approach “from form to meaning”, the orientation in the opposite direc tion “from meaning to means of expression” is also necessary; thirdly, the question of the need to analyze the grammatical rules related to the use of aspectual forms. On question (1), a solution to the dilemma is proposed, specifically whether to con sider the formation of an aspectual pair as an inflection or to accept that in this case the status of an independent verb is preserved. The article supports the second point of view. Regarding question (2), attention is given to the concepts of resultative and iterative actions in a broader sense, taking into account different means of expres sion. In the case of issue (3), the question has a direct effect on teaching: it ad dresses the ordering of the so-called “aspectual rules” on the basis of their hierarchi cal relationships, with particular emphasis on the relativity of the role of resultative meaning .
