Development of an AI-Integrated 5E Learning Cycle Instructional Model for Pre-service Early Childhood Teachers

This study aims to develop an AI-based 5E learning cycle instructional model by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into inquiry-based early childhood education and to explore its educational validity and applicability with prospective early childhood teachers. Based on theoretical analyses of inquiry-centered learning, the 5E model, and AI-integrated education, a structured instructional model was designed, linking AI tools to each stage of the 5E cycle (Engage-Explore-Explain-Elaborate-Evaluate). The content validity of the model was reviewed through a Focus Group Interview (FGI) with five experts. In addition, a practice-based workshop was conducted with twelve prospective early childhood teachers to examine the model's practical feasibility. Rubric evaluations and reflection analyses confirmed the meaningfulness and potential of the model. The experts found the model developmentally appropriate and pedagogically coherent, while the prospective teachers recognized AI as a supportive tool for learning and redefined the teacher’s role as an educational mediator. This study demonstrates the practical potential of integrating AI into early childhood education and provides a foundation for strengthening AI-based instructional design competencies in teacher education programs
