A Study on the Learning Experiences and Perceived Meanings of K-MOOC among Adult Learners in Higher Education

This study aims to analyze the learning experiences and perceived meanings of K-MOOC (Korea Massive Open Online Course) among adult learners in higher education. A qualitative research approach was adopted, incorporating a literature review and in-depth interviews. K-MOOC is an online platform that provides diverse educational content to support self-directed learning through digital technologies. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven adult learners who had prior experience with K-MOOC courses. The findings revealed the following: First, in terms of learning outcomes and experiences, participants reported improvements in professional competencies, exploration of second career paths, adoption of efficient learning strategies, enhanced self-directed learning ability and confidence, and challenges with interaction. Second, regarding the perceived roles and effects of K-MOOC, participants described it as a means of discovering their “true self,” a companion in lifelong learning, and a tool for career development. Third, the study suggests the need for flexible academic systems, expanded and diversified support tailored to adult learners’ age and circumstances, and strategies to overcome limitations of online learning platforms. These insights highlight the potential of K-MOOC to reduce knowledge disparities among adult learners in universities and to serve as a vital component of lifelong education.
