Archival volunteering in Scandinavian countries

Archival institutions, traditionally performing the functions of preserving the documentary historical memory of the people, in the 21st century accepted new challenges resulting from the development of the information society and the spread of information technologies in the field of document management, the emergence of electronic document management, which inevitably raises questions about the adaptation of archivists to new realities with the direct participation of volunteer assistants. The article summarizes the experience of archives in a number of Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway and Finland) in the development of an industry direction in the structure of the volunteer movement - archival volunteering. The advantages of volunteer participation in the project and current activities of archival institutions are analyzed, such as saving resources, expanding the audience, improving the quality of work and improving the availability of information. Models of volunteer work organizations on the site of archival institutions are studied, and various formats of cooperation (online, offline, hybrid) of archives with volunteer assistants are considered. Special attention is paid to the key principles and mechanisms of crowdsourcing, as well as their role in solving the problems facing modern archives (digitization of documents, cataloging and indexing, translation of texts, transcription of audio and video recordings, as well as public participation in historical research). Examples of successful archival projects are given. Familiarization with foreign experience in organizing volunteer activities of archives will allow domestic institutions to use successful practices of cooperation with volunteer assistants and building working relationships.
