The formation of the development of peripheral quarters of the central part of Tver’ on the example of the estate of the Staritsky nobles Kornilovs

The great fire of 1763, which destroyed a considerable number of buildings in the central part of Tver’, contributed to the creation of a new planning structure for the capital of the Upper Volga region, based on regular urban planning principles. If the territories closest to the Kremlin were built up, as a rule, with stone (and often two-store) buildings, then the periphery of the city center (the so-called "suburb") became a place where it was possible to build houses with a stone first and wooden second tier. In general, this part of Tver’ was spared from the excessive fuss and activity of the Kremlin zone and its neighboring quarters. Therefore, officials and nobility of varying degrees often choose the peripheral territories of the center, endowed to a certain extent with comfort, for residence. Among the latter, many military personnel continued to serve or were retired. Among them were the Kornilov naval officers. The latter owned an estate with a large stone and wooden two-store house located on one of the main squares of the main thoroughfare of the center of Tver’. The organizer and hero of the First Defense of Sevastopol, Vice Admiral Vladimir Alekseevich Kornilov, who died during the first bombing of the city on October 5, 1854, could have visited this house. The building of the Kornilovskaya estate survived until the 80s of the 20th century, and then it was destroyed during the grandiose reconstruction of the former Octagonal Square.
