July 28 – World Hepatitis Day
In 1965, American scientist Baruch Samuel Blumberg discovered the hepatitis B virus and proved the infectious nature of this disease, as a result of which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. The first World Hepatitis Day was celebrated in 2008, and was then held on May 19, but after Blumberg's death in 2011, it was proposed to celebrate World Hepatitis Day on the birthday of its discoverer, namely July 28. The celebration is held under the auspices of the World Hepatitis Alliance. The main goal of the commemorative date is to increase the number of people aware of the threat of various forms of hepatitis. This commemorative date is one of four official WHO days dedicated to the fight against infectious diseases, along with World Tuberculosis Day, World Malaria Day, and World AIDS Day.
