UJI AKTIVITAS ANTIMIKROBA EKSTRAK KULIT PINANG (Areca catechu L) TERHADAP Escherichia coli DAN Candida albicans

The chlorite of areca nut (Areca catechu L) contains polyphenol compounds. Polyphenol compounds in areca nut peels, such as flavonoids, can potentially act as antioxidants that can kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of areca nut bark extract (Areca catechu) on Escherichia coli bacteria and Candida albicans fungus growth. In this study, experimental laboratory research was used. The extracts were produced using the maceration method with an extract concentration of 20%, 30%, and 60%. The positive controls used for bacteria were Ciprofloxacin and Ketoconazole, and for fungi. Negative control uses the DMSO solution. Based on the research results, a phytochemical screening test was carried out to determine the content of secondary metabolites found in areca nut skin, and positive results were obtained for flavonoids, tannins, and steroids. From the results of the antimicrobial activity test of areca nut bark ethanol extract against Escherichia coli bacteria using concentrations of 20%, 30%, 60% respectively 6,2 mm, 6.4 mm and 8 mm. And from the results of the antimicrobial activity test of areca nut bark ethanol extract against the fungus Candida albicans using concentrations of 20%, 30%, 60% respectively 6,3 mm, 6,5 mm and 6,6 mm. The conclusion of the antimicrobial activity test of areca nut extract and ethanol extract against Escherichia coli bacteria and Candida albicans is in the moderate category in all concentration categories.
