Sustainability and Climate Anxiety: Exploring the Environmental Values and Emotional Responses of Gen Z Youth

As climate change intensifies, Generation Z (born 1997–2012) faces unprecedented environmental challenges, shaping their values and emotional responses. This study explores the interplay between sustainability, environmental values, and climate anxiety among Gen Z youth, examining how their commitment to ecological stewardship influences their mental well-being. Drawing on a mixed-methods approach, including surveys (n=500) and in-depth interviews (n=30) with Gen Z individuals across Korba city of Chhattisgarh and their surroundings urban and rural settings, the research investigates their environmental attitudes, sustainable behaviours, and emotional reactions to climate crises. Findings reveal that Gen Z exhibits strong environmental values, prioritizing sustainability through actions like reducing waste, supporting eco-friendly brands, and advocating for policy change. However, these values coexist with heightened climate anxiety, characterized by feelings of helplessness, fear, and frustration over ecological degradation and perceived inaction by governments and corporations. Rural youth report stronger connections to nature, fostering resilience, while urban youth express greater exposure to climate discourse via social media, amplifying anxiety. Gender and socioeconomic status further modulate responses, with women and lower-income individuals reporting higher anxiety levels. The study highlights a paradox: while sustainability empowers Gen Z to act, systemic barriers and apocalyptic climate narratives exacerbate emotional distress. Recommendations include fostering community-based environmental initiatives and integrating mental health support into climate education to bolster resilience. By bridging environmental values with emotional well-being, this research underscores the need for holistic strategies to empower Gen Z in navigating climate challenges while mitigating anxiety.
