Addressing Non-Communicable Diseases Through Lifestyle Modification, Patient Education, and Mental Health Awareness
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory illnesses, and cancers, account for nearly 74% of global deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) (1).As family physicians and researchers, we witness the devastating impact of NCDs on individuals, families, and healthcare systems on a daily basis. While pharmacological treatments remain essential, a paradigm shift toward lifestyle modification, patient education, and mental health awareness is crucial to curb the rising burden of NCDs.Lifestyle Modification: The First Line of Defense Lifestyle factors-poor diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption-are the leading contributors to NCDs.Research consistently demonstrates that structured lifestyle interventions can prevent, delay, or even reverse many chronic conditions.
