Simulation-based Design of Plate-fin Heat Exchangers for Cryogenic CO2 Removal from Biogas
Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) is essential for mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from significant sources, with CO2 removal being the fundamental stage. In biomethane upgrading, the effective elimination of CO2 from biogas is essential to comply with pipeline quality regulations and improve energy content. Among numerous removal techniques, cryogenic CO2 removal has gained considerable interest for its capacity to selectively and efficiently extract CO2 at low temperatures. The plate-fin heat exchanger (PFHE), recognised for its superior heat transfer efficiency and compact configuration, is appropriate especially for cryogenic applications. This work involves the design of a PFHE for cryogenic CO2 removal in biomethane upgrading, utilising Aspen EDR software. The impact of CO2 concentration on design and heat transfer rate is examined.
