Techno-Economic Analysis and Prediction of Thermo-mechanical Energy Storage Technology

Thermal-mechanical energy storage (TMES) technology is a key technical equipment that supports the safe and stable operation of the power grid, and achieves carbon peak and carbon neutrality. At present, various types of TMES technologies are in the early stages of development. Few relevant studies have adopted a unified evaluation method to conduct relatively objective economic analysis the premise of fully considering the actual engineering construction status of various energy storage technology. The main objective of this paper is to conduct techno-economic evaluation and prediction of TMES technologies, and compare with electrochemical energy storage technologies. Based on an in-depth market survey, the technical parameters and cost of various energy storage technologies were mastered, and the levelized energy storage cost (LCOS) were selected as the evaluation indicator. This study proved the economic advantages of TMES in the field of long-term energy storage. Currently, for energy storage requirements lasting more than 4 hours, it is recommended to choose compressed air energy storage, as it can achieve better economic efficiency. The costs of the core equipment for liquid air energy storage, compressed carbon dioxide energy storage and vanadium redox flow battery energy storage urgently need to be further reduced to enhance their competitiveness.

Thermal-mechanical energy storage (TMES) technology is a key technical equipment that supports the safe and stable operation of the power grid, and achieves carbon peak and carbon neutrality. At present, various types of TMES technologies are in the early stages of development.
