Unified Payments Interface (UPI): Fraud and Prevention Strategies
The Indian Unified Payments Interface sees frauds building up daily, which is a matter of concern for the users and banks. The research paper explores the various kinds of UPI fraud and the effects it poses to the user as well as the economy. It analyzes current strategies being adopted to counter these issues. They use the vulnerabilities in the systems along with social engineering frauds to cheat the users, resulting in severe losses and the destruction of people's trust in digital payment platforms. The fraud is usually carried out through impersonation, phishing, and unauthorized access to a UPI account. The fraudsters misleadingly steal sensitive information or get somebody's transactions done without his knowledge. Such practices have after-effects that go beyond monetary losses as such practices are emotionally distressing for the victims and detrimental to public confidence in the security of digital payment systems. Currently, implemented security measures including two-factor authentication and transaction limits have been effective. Additional measures that can promote security include biometric authentication to ensure the availability of accounts for authentic UPI users only. It should also be ensured that the fraud knowledge is minimized. A lot of such users are still in the dark regarding fraudster tactics, which makes them fall into such a scam trap. Continuous adaptation of security measures with the strengthening of cooperation between financial institutions, law enforcement, and tech companies in efforts toward fraud reduction and public trust will make UPI safe for the future.
