The Role of AI and Personalized Medicine in Healthcare::Balancing Technological Advancements and Human Expertise

In recent decades, significant advancements in health technology have resulted in the accumulation of a large amount of personal health data for each patient. This shift has led to a growing need for healthcare professionals to have enhanced expertise in understanding and utilizing health data in clinical decision-making processes. In response to this need, a new master's program in personalized medicine has been established across 5 universities in Denmark. Drawing on the sociology of expertise and sociology of professions, in this study, we explored how the teachers and master students perceived the nature of the knowledge needed when digitalisation influence patient treatment and care. Our findings suggest a strong belief among teachers and course planners in the ability of these fields to revolutionize healthcare by tailoring treatment options and improving diagnostics. Among the master’s students it was emphasized that AI should not replace medical professionals but should instead complement their work by providing rapid results and supporting their decision-making process.
