Racialized and ‘infinite’ boundaries:How employees disconnect by cultural Othering of highly qualified migrants at workplaces
The purpose of this study is to identify micro-level, interpersonal experiences with being constructed as “The Other” in professional work settings as recounted by highly qualified migrants in Denmark. Speech acts of ostracism at work detrimentally affect psychological and physical health and trigger a cycle of insecurity and alienation from the organization. Although discursively framed as ‘welcomed migrants’ highly qualified migrants report recurring experiences of being made “the Other” in work contexts in subtle and mundane ways.
