Ukrainian Mural: Implementation of Global Artistic Experience and National Specificity of Expression

Ukrainian mural art, as a genre of contemporary art, has developed at the intersection of global artistic trends and national cultural traditions, playing a significant role in shaping social, aesthetic, and political discourse. Over the past decade, this genre has gained considerable popularity, as murals have become not only elements of the urban environment but also powerful tools for communication among artists, society, and the international community. The role of mural art as a medium for social dialogue has become particularly evident following the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian war, during which wall paintings have served as instruments of cultural resistance, affirmations of national identity, and channels for intercultural exchange. This paper examines the integration of global artistic experience into the development of Ukrainian muralism and its interaction with international art movements. It analyzes the influence of global artistic practices on the evolution of Ukrainian monumental painting and explores the cultural factors that shape the uniqueness of this genre within Ukraine. The study outlines key challenges faced by mural artists, including the absence of legislative support, issues related to mural preservation and legal status, and their reception within society. Particular attention is paid to the socio-cultural role of murals in urban spaces, their impact on collective memory and city symbolism, and mechanisms of international collaboration within public art initiatives. The research emphasizes that murals function not only as aesthetic components of the urban landscape but also as mediators of social dialogue. Reflecting historical, social, and political processes, murals contribute to the development of cultural identity, provide platforms for public reflection, and highlight urgent contemporary issues. A critical aspect of the genre’s evolution is the digital documentation and dissemination of murals through online platforms, which support the preservation and promotion of this artistic heritage. The article explores the prospects for the further development of Ukrainian muralism in the context of globalization, its position within the international art scene, and its potential as a tool of cultural diplomacy. The findings may be of interest to art historians, urbanists, cultural researchers, and artists involved in shaping the visual identity of cities.
