Examination and Attribution Challenges of the Painting Crowning With Thorns (Collection of the Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery)

This research paper presents a comprehensive scientific report on the technical examination of the painting Crowning with Thorns from the collection of the Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery. The investigation employed a combination of non-invasive methods (X-radiography, infrared reflectography, macro photography) and invasive techniques (microchemical analysis, stratigraphy). The author interprets the data obtained and contextualizes it within a broader framework of attribution through comparative analysis with reference studies of similar artworks. This approach has allowed to formulate and substantiate the new hypotheses regarding the painting’s provenance, authorship, and dating. The examination revealed significant features of the artwork that are of exceptional value to art historical research and may inform future studies conducted by both Ukrainian and international scholars. The paper also discusses past conservation interventions and their impact on the technical examination process, with particular attention to how the complexities of restoration work can influence attribution outcomes when relying on material analysis methods.
