Studio of Serhii Svitoslavskyi: The first gathering of“new art”
The paper examines the organization of an art studio in 1906 by students expelled from the Kyiv Art School. This studio became known in the history of Ukrainian art as Serhii Svitoslavskyi’s studio. A brief overview of private art studios in Kyiv at the beginning of the 20th century is provided, outlining their specializations and target audiences. The author explores various aspects of the studio’s founding and analyzes the key artistic teaching principles that served as an alternative to the academic pedagogical programs prevailing at the Kyiv Art School. It is noted that during this period, Oleksandr Bohomazov and Oleksii Hryshchenko began experimenting with separate color brushstrokes in their works, while Oleksandr Arkhypenko sought new expressive forms in sculpture. Special focus is on the exhibition organized by the studio’s students, which featured future leaders of the global, European, and Ukrainian avant-garde: Oleksandr Arkhypenko and Oleksandr Bohomazov. The study highlights the crucial role that Svitoslavskyi’s studio played in overcoming academicism and enabling young Ukrainian modernists to adopt new artistic principles in their creative work.
