On the Forms of Systematization of Historical Monuments of Law

Legal and historical sciences have developed different approaches regarding the forms of systematization of Russian legislation for the period of XI-XIXth centuries, and this situation is reflected in educational literature. The same historical monuments of law (Russkaya Pravda, Sudebniki, Sobornoye Ulozhenie, the Complete Collection of Laws of the Russian Empire, the Code of Laws of the Russian Empire) are classified either as incorporation or as codification of legislation. The established stereotypes often come into play. On the one hand, legal literature lacks consensus on the number of forms of systematization, while on the other hand, researchers tend to have doubts about the validity of applying modern legal definitions to historical monuments of law. This problem is also relevant when characterizing foreign monuments of law.
