Adapting to a New India: Reading Satyajit Ray’s Ganashatru (1989) as an Indian Afterlife of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People (1882)

Abstract: This paper analyzes Ganashatru (Enemy of the People, 1989), the first film of Satyajit Ray’s final trilogy, and demonstrates that Ray deviates from his signatory aesthetics at the end of his career while adapting Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of the People, making a distinctly political statement against the rising tide of religious extremism in India’s public milieu.
