E-Commerce Frauds: Awareness and Preventive Measures

E-commerce has significantly transformed global commerce, providing consumers with unmatched convenience and access to goods and services worldwide. However, this digital revolution has also given rise to E-commerce frauds. Cybercriminals exploit various techniques, such as phishing, identity theft, fraudulent websites, and payment scams, to deceive consumers and undermine trust in online transactions. These risks pose a serious threat to both consumer confidence and the long term viability of e commerce businesses. This study examines the current awareness levels surrounding e-commerce fraud and evaluates the cybersecurity measures consumers and businesses employ to counter these threats. Data was collected from 200 respondents providing insight into public understanding of common cyber threats and the actions taken to protect personal and financial information. The research identifies significant gaps in consumer knowledge, particularly regarding emerging forms of cyber-attacks, and highlights the need for better awareness and training to mitigate these risks effectively. The findings underscore the importance of proactive measures in ensuring a secure online shopping environment. Key recommendations include enhanced cybersecurity education for consumers, the implementation of advanced fraud detection systems, and stronger regulatory frameworks. Businesses should adopt best practices in cybersecurity, such as secure payment gateways, encryption technologies, and two-factor authentication, to safeguard consumer data and maintain trust. Furthermore, policymakers must create a robust legal framework that addresses the evolving landscape of e commerce fraud. By adopting these strategies, stakeholders can help build a safer digital marketplace. This study provides actionable insights aimed at reducing the incidence of cybercrime, enhancing consumer protection, and fostering a trustworthy and secure e-commerce ecosystem for both businesses and shoppers alike.
