Addiction-like Behavior Associated with YouTube among Adolescent Boys and Girls in South India

Background: The rapid growth of digital technology, particularly YouTube, has significantly impacted adolescents, raising concerns about addiction-like behaviors. In South India, increased internet access has heightened these issues, leading to negative outcomes such as disrupted sleep and impaired academics. This study examines YouTube addiction patterns among South Indian adolescents. Objectives: To assess the various aspects of YouTube addiction among adolescents and adults. Materials and Methods: The data were collected among adolescent and adult males and females from 18 to 35 years old using a 22-item YouTube addiction scale questionnaire. Results: The study reveals balanced gender representation, predominant use by 18–23 years old, and high urban (83%) versus rural (17%) engagement. Most respondents have higher education and use mobile phones (88.7%). High YouTube usage suggests potential addiction risks, underscoring the need for strategies to promote healthy digital habits in South Indian adolescents. Conclusion: This study highlights the addictive nature of YouTube, showing extensive use, emotional dependency, and behavioral tendencies among adolescents. Conflicts include prioritization issues, loss of control, reduced physical activity, and life management difficulties. Future research should explore intervention strategies to promote healthier YouTube habits and digital well-being.
