Carrier-Based Current-Mode Discontinuous Pulse-Width Modulation for the Loss Reduction of VSI

This paper presents the current-mode discontinuous pulse-width modulation (CM-DPWM) method applied to a twolevel three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). CM-DPWM is able to reduce the switching loss to 50% of continuous pulse-width modulation (CPWM) in the range of power factor angle <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\varphi$</tex> from 30° to 30°. CM-PWM does not need to get real-time power factor (PF) and can be implemented by sampling only the three-phase currents. The efficiency of CM-DPWM in the full <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\varphi$</tex> range is superior to that of DPWM1, DPWMMAX, and DPWMMIN. The efficiency of CM-DPWM in the range of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$2 / 3 \varphi$</tex> is better than that of DPWM0, DPWM2, and DPWM3. In this paper, firstly, the implementation method of CM-DPWM is given. Secondly, the switching losses of different DPWM methods are compared by switching loss function (SLF). Finally, the efficient performance of CM-DPWM is verified by simulation and experimentation.
